I Don't Care

Whenever you stay in the dark for too long, there are only two things that can possibly happen. One, the darkness will consume you, or two, you'll see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I wouldn't say that I've been in the dark or anything like that, but a small phase of it. Love is a bitch, who doesn't know that? It's not really a new concept to anyone. After 4 months, one more or less, of lingering around I knew it wasn't going to go anywhere. It was one of those moments where you have to really force yourself to see what is truly going on. Yeah sure, follow your heart and wherever it takes you, but don't let the heart rule the mind. I took step one and erased you from everything hoping that you would notice, but you didn't, go figure. I kept thinking about you during the day and right before I would fall asleep. So step two was goodbye. Funny enough, I decided to ask you for "advice" and explain my situation to you wondering what would you say? "Forget it, you can find someone better", is what I got. It was hilarious that you didn't know who I was talking about. In the end, goodbye it was. I forced myself to believe it was never going to work out. So, go party, go drink, go smoke, go tell someone else lies, go live out your days like you already do. What about me? I don't care.

On another note, my busy summer has kicked into action. VSA is slowly going to work it's way to take up the rest of my days and there's a few CHAMP stuff to do. But I have my family and my friends to keep me going no matter what. As I told Patrick the other day on the phone, I'm going to take everything step by step and see where it leads me. There's no point of rushing into things and having them collapse on me halfway through. Time to get to work!

"You fooled me with your lies hundreds of times. From today I'll be a bad boy who makes people cry. Now without a single tear, I'll laugh at you. Inside a game called love, you're a loser. Get on your knees and take me back, if not, get out of my sight right now." - CL (2NE1) -->

I Hate You

(1:52:14): i miss youuu

You pretty much say that to everyone. I don't know why I act this way. We're only friends right? You're not looking for anything else. I can't seem to get that through my brain. I'm chasing pavements though I know it's leading nowhere. I just like the fact that you didn't notice a thing. Call me stupid, call me crazy, I don't give a fuck. I hate myself so much I could go crazy. I hate myself for being like this.

Chasing Pavements

I've made up my mind
Don't need to think it over
If I'm wrong I am right
Don't need to look no further
This ain't lust
I know this is love

But if I tell the world I'll never say enough 'cause it was not said to you
And that’s exactly what I need to do if I end up with you

Should I give up or should I just keep chasing pavements
Even if it leads nowhere or would it be a waste
Even if I knew my place should I leave it there
Should I give up or should I just keep chasing pavements
Even if it leads nowhere

I build myself up and fly around in circles
Waiting as my heart drops and my back begins to tingle
Finally could this be it

Or should I give up
Or should I just keep chasing pavements
Even if it leads nowhere or would it be a waste
Even if I knew my place should I leave it there
Should I give up or should I just keep chasing pavements
Even if it leads nowhere
Yeah

Should I give up or should I just keep chasing pavements
Even if it leads nowhere or would it be a waste
Even if I knew my place should I leave it there
Should I give up or should I just keep on chasing pavements
Should I just keep on chasing pavements
Oh oh

Should I give up or should I just keep chasing pavements
Even if it leads nowhere or would it be a waste
Even if I knew my place should I leave it there
Should I give up or should I just keep chasing pavements
Even if it leads nowhere

This song makes me chuckle, hah.

Step One

I feel the heavy weight on my heart lifting.
I know this is going to be difficult.
It might take days, weeks, or even months.
I'm prepared to accept the consequences.
I feel proud of myself.
Why?
Because I have taken step one.

Just Dance

It's been two weeks of summer and it's now hitting the third. I haven't been doing much so far. I stopped looking for a job (in this economy barely anyone is hiring) and VSA hasn't really kicked into action just yet. I've been out a few times, parties here and there, and a few catering events (rolling in some dough at least). Nevertheless, it hasn't been very productive.

But! I want to change that. If you read my entry on returning back to blogging, I talked about exploring, discovering, and becoming this summer. One of the things I was going to put my most effort into was dancing. So what does that mean? Daniel's going to dance? But don't I already know how? Yes, I do, but I'm going to try to take it to another level. Well, we'll see what happens right? Few things I want to try:
Again & Again - 2PM
I Hate You - 2PM
Like Me - Girlicious (Finish)
Juliette - SHINee
Fallin' Out - Keyshia Cole
Gee - Girl's Generation
Tell Me Your Wish (Genie) - Girl's Generation
Only One - Cherish
There's a few for now, haha. I'm most likely not going to get to all of them this summer, but I can try and do my best. I don't want it to look like half-assed, I want it to look good as much as the original. Also it's going to be a head start for Korean Club, well somewhat.

Speaking of Korean, the Wonder Girls have done it again. Well, kind of. They recently released their English single, which is a remake of their fourth Korean single, called Nobody. You should be hearing it right now. I can't help but feel proud of them. Their English is pretty flawless, they've kept their image and didn't sell out to American Entertainment (no offense), and the song has the same exact meaning as it did in Korean. Now, that song means more to me than it did before. It's pretty easy to relate to my current situation with the song. I don't know how long this is going to last, but it's starting to hurt. The past few days the feeling was gone and I don't know, it felt pretty good. Then today it came back after talking to you. Hm. I don't know what to do. Help.

I want nobody nobody but you. - Clap Clap-

You Belong With Me

Summer has begun and I guess you could say I'm a senior now.

There's no difference expect that small feeling that college is right around the corner and I'm only 16. It seems a little early, but before you know it I'm going to be on the Wilcox football field in a black cap and gown walking between the underclassmen. Hm, something I don't look forward to thinking about just yet.

It's only been my fourth day into summer and I officially hit boredom. The first two days were all party hardy, which was really fun, don't get me wrong. Monday had to come around though, boo, and today was just tad bit better, but the same. I thought school was over, but I remembered there was catering to do for CHAMPS tomorrow and Thursday. Hopefully the Tech Museum will let us in for free! Oh that would be so cool, haha. Anyways, I've been going back to games again like I do every summer when I hit rock bottom and this time it's way too early. But what can you do?

Patrick is visiting Friday! (:
Egh, I have to sign his yearbook and make it full-filling. A whole page? What to talk about? Nah. I know what say and throwing in a few corny lines will take up a space or two. Heh. I should tag his name too and that will give me something to do too while these boring days pass by. Yellow doesn't seem too good of a color to tag in, I guess I'll have to secretly ask him what other colors he likes.

So what's up with the blog title "You Belong With Me" you might ask? Well, isn't it obvious? It's the song, duh. Lately I've been having a Taylor Swift obsession (not like my cousin's) and iderno, this song appealed out to me. Funny for those who understand and sorry for those who don't. Don't get any wrong ideas though, nevertheless, it's a good song and she's a pretty good songwriter. Crystal keeps saying she looks better in the red dress then the white one cause she always wears the white one, haha. I agree.

Sorry for the unprofessionalism (Is that even a word?) of this post, yeah, it bother me, but oh well. I've been having a serious case of insomnia lately, wtf.

More Than Just Moves

“Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who could not hear the music.” - Angela Monet

When I was in elementary school, I used to dance all the time in my room with my sister. We would close the door, turn up the music, and go wild. Though my fun from dancing died as I entered middle school, it captivated me again in high school. From “Visions of Vietnam” to Homecoming to Fantatics, I would stay for countless hours everyday after school and practiced each choreographed piece, until it was imprinted into my brain. One dance after another, new intricate moves challenged me every time, but I did it because I wanted to look the best.
Dancing is not simple, and I know that. It takes a huge amount of exertion, concentration, and dedication to be able to make your moves look crisp, clean, and most of all, effortless. I had always thought dancing was an easy thing to learn; I mean it’s just moving parts of your body around to the rhythm of the music, right? Wrong. America’s Best Dance Crew exhibits dance crews from across the nation to compete against each other to show their ability in the technique of hip-hop dancing. There are broad ranges of styles when it comes to hip-hop, such as popping, locking, and the ever-so-common breakdancing. These styles do not take seconds to master, but months of hard work, dedication and practice.
But where does these individuals’ devotion come from? Do they dance because their parents have told them to, or do they dance because it is their dream and they have something motivating them every step of the way? Their passion: where did it come from and why? Well, that is what I hope to find out.

As I began my research, I did not know where to start. Should I go to the library or Barnes and Nobles? You can’t find books on how dancers acquire their passion and dedication because most books are on how to dance or the origin of dancing. I situated myself on my red swivel chair at my smooth wooden table and spun around, not knowing what to do. My spins began to slow down and I realized that I was focusing a little too much on my essential question when I didn’t know the basics of hip-hop. A drop of sweat went down my forehead, as it was a little too late to go to the library. The Internet it was. Let the investigation commence!

I discovered that all the moves of hip-hop are connected to two cultural groups: African Americans and Hispanics. Hip-hop is a type of street dance that was created from folk art traditions and new styles tend to be discovered when people form a circle that around dancers performing on the floor. A circle is formed usually when people are intrigued by a dancer’s freestyling, meaning improvisational dance, or when two dancers battle each other to establish who’s superior. These certain types of events often take place on the streets, schoolyards, and nightclubs. The history of hip-hop is united with the history of hip-hop music no matter how you look at it. A Jamaican-American began developing the sound that hip-hop dancers have utilized as break beats. These beats and moves allow dancers to create dance moves which are changed into a dance piece. Break beats have allowed countless moves such as breaking, popping, locking, waving, sliding, and krumping. Majority of these moves are the basis to hip-hop dancing and are a need to know in order to begin.

One of most popular move is popping, which is where one pops a certain part of the body – majority of the times people use their arms. On an instructional video that I found, to begin, one must have their hand flat (like a karate chop). First drop their middle knuckles so that it makes a 90-degree angle, then drop the rest of their fingers to their real knuckles and drop straight down their hand to their wrist. One’s elbow should be below their wrist and their hand should be pointing down, so that the arm makes a slight triangle. Now raise both fingertips and elbow and drop the wrist. I began to follow the video and it was entirely confusing for my brain to comprehend. I wasn’t used to learning things off videos, as an instructor in person seemed more helpful.

Like all topics, hip-hop has its own history, which may be one of the key essentials that draw in people to become hip-hop dancers. My research did not lead me very far in finding the answers that I needed, but it was very helpful as I created my discussion questions. The essential question was still left unanswered, which led me to my next step: the interview.

I started to create letters for requesting an interview. Whom would I interview though? I asked four interviewees. Some rejected me automatically while others accepted, then rejected. The negative responses seemed endless. I rapidly rushed to my computer and logged on to Facebook to find a dancer among my friends that could lend me a hand in such a critical time. My eyes were as big as an owl's, scrolling through my friend list, and I spotted the name, Melfred Ignacio. Melfred used to be the "dancer" of Wilcox High School, but now since he had graduated, he has been in various dance crews around the Bay Area. I decided not to waste any time and instant messaged him with my request for an interview. I hit success.

It was a cold Thursday night as I stood outside the Infinity Dance Studio waiting for Melfred to show up. It was just a regular ordinary place with shops aligned with it, such as Jack-In-The-Box, a convenience store, and a small Chinese fast food place. As I took out my aqua, Juke phone, the time hit 9:40 pm. Ten minutes late. Maybe he is inside already. I looked through the door. The other dancers began stretching and gave me weird looks as I stood outside. A middle-aged man – maybe late thirties – wearing a black hat, jacket, and basketball shorts with a red t-shirt and a pair of black and red Nikes, approached me from my left and asked me if I was Melfred's friend. I nodded my head and he introduced himself as Jeffro, the dance director. We began to chat for a bit when I decided to ask him my essential question. I asked him where does your passion and commitment for dancing come from? "It's about art and expression. One thing that I love that it keeps you away from trouble. Many of these kids that I have here are still in their teens and it's better for them to be here and dance rather them being on the streets and getting into trouble with drugs or whatever." He invited me into the studio and told me that I could stay as long as I needed to complete my I-Search. An interview and a site observation? Ms. Courey would say that's killing two birds with one stone, haha.

Melfred arrived at the studio and we began the interview immediately. He sported a somewhat long hairstyle while wearing a simple blue sweater with black basketball shorts and a pair of brown Nike shoes. As I started plowing through each question, I could tell that he was a little nervous since he was fidgeting and his tone of voice was slightly shaky. Dancing caught his interest when he fell in love with the creation process and started to pick up choreographed moves from YouTube. “I dance because simply, I love it and there’s nothing I really rather do. Some people say don’t let dance take over your life, but there’s not one day that goes by that I don’t think about dancing. So pretty much, it’s my passion.” Bingo! Right on the spot.
As I continued, we finally hit the most important question of all. “Where does my passion and commitment come from?” Initially he wants to get really good at it and be all that he can be and he loves performing on stage. “Uh, I really don’t know how to explain it. It’s just there, it comes from the heart and it’s like ah, like fire.”

I understood where Melfred was coming from. Passion is one of those feelings you could not put into words, but you can show. Everyone has a different story about what motivates him or her to dance, and it is inspiring to hear such stories, such as Jeffro’s. From growing up and watching people you know dance or finding your talent, what I have learned is that it starts from the beginning, and carries on until the end. The interview was truly a success, but I wasn’t done here. I wanted to know does the environment where they practice affect their dancing? There was only one way to find out.

Melfred and I headed back into the studio so he could begin exercise with the other dancers. The Infinity Dance Studio is pretty much a simple four-wall room with a simple smooth teal tiled floor for easy dancing. One wall consists of the full-length mirror while the other wall holds the trophies and awards won through sweat and months of hard work. The moment I walked into that room, I felt a little intimidated by all the other dancers with their deceitful and sharp glances. I was introduced as Melfred’s friend and a few gave me a friendly smile while others brushed me off. I sat in the corner and started my observations.

Watching the dancers exercise was like watching one of those workout videos. The music was turned loud so you could hear the beats, and everyone was doing the same movements for a period of time. “Ready? 1, 2, 3,” someone shouted. The room had a sudden shift in mood as it went from pumped to awkward as everyone started doing pelvic thrusts in the air as I was sitting there, just examining. Time went by slowly as if one was sitting in class waiting for the period to end. At the end of the workout, the dancers were told that they had to perform their homework, which was to create eight eight-counts to a song of their choice. Finally, some dancing.

Each dancer began to perform their piece – or homework – one by one in front of the director and classmates. First a dancer danced their piece, showing little effort by sticking an arm out here and there and making small movements, and I thought, that’s it? But as life likes to prove me wrong, the dancer went a second time with full force, captivating me into their dance with their precise moves, spins, and slides across the floor. What I found fascinating was that you could tell what a person was like by their song choice and the way they moved. It was like they were showing me who they were in just a few seconds of movements. Also the way they danced set the mood in the room. A guy named John Asilo went up and changed the room into laughter with his funny moves by jumping into the air while making facial expressions such as, bobbing his head back and forth while sticking his tongue out in his dance and upbeat song. As Layne Bloom came right after him, the room was completely calm as her song was slow and soothing to the ears and her movements were graceful and meaningful as she made each turn and spin, or an extension of her arms creating wings.

My experience at the dance studio was utterly breathtaking since I was taken to a whole new level. I experienced something challenging to describe into words as I felt the emotions from each dance and dancer. They must know how to control the room according to how they feel so that the audience can grasp the same emotions. Leaving the studio, I never believed dancing could affect my soul and inspire me. I wanted to know how they were able to create such power? Sadly, my I-Search was coming to and end.

Throughout the whole I-Search process, I honestly have to say I enjoyed the journey. My essential question led me all over the place, from the beginning of dance to current modern dancers. I have learned there is not one answer to why dancers are dedicated to dancing, but thousands of them. Each person holds something different that fuels the fire of passion, as corny as that may sound. Before the research all I did, I danced without thinking, but now meeting new people who had such a strong passion for dancing makes me wonder if I can do it too?

There were a lot of difficulties and challenges in trying to research and write in my I-Search. During the research, I did not know where exactly to start or what information I was looking for. Obviously my main question could not be answered through books. I had a hard time selecting which piece of information should be entered into my I-Search, but nothing was as hard as trying to describe each dancer’s move to match the feeling that they gave off during the site observation. Nevertheless, I loved how I was able to use my own voice for this style of writing as it opened more options for me. Plus, it was exciting to meet professional dancers and having the opportunity to watch them dance although it lasted until one in the morning.

In the end, hip-hop dancing has caught my interest and may be a potential path in my life. I want to take my whole dancing ability to another level. Can I create this passion for dancing? Can I make people feel my emotions as I dance? Who knows, that is something I have to try out on my own. Now I have the knowledge to explore, discover, and become a dancer.

Decisions

@jeffreyphung - The One Who Got Away:
One of my friends once said that for every person out there, there's that one person that you'll really always have a thing for. In essence, everyone has a person who they think of as "the one that got away." I don't necesarily believe that's true, but I kind of wonder if she's right. Is there someone that you've never really been able to shake off? I wonder this out loud 'cause it would suck if that were the case. I don't think I would want to live the rest of my life kind of having a thing for someone if they were to ever show up. And I wouldn't want to go on not knowing either. That would suck. It makes you think though, if that's the case and she's right. Also makes me re-evalute some of my own decisions. If you care about someone, you've gotta let them know, yes?

"I need a hook so you
Won't be the one that got away
I need a look that stuns you
Makes you wanna stay
Don't wanna speak in case it
Comes out wrong
Don't wanna blink
'Cause in that second
You could be gone."
- Natasha Bedingfield, "The One That Got Away."

You're a wise woman Natasha Bedingfield. A wise wise woman.

Haha, so what's the decision you ask? To tell or not to tell. Well, it's more of a confession then just telling. So make it, do I confess my feelings because honestly girl, you're all I think about. Sometimes I wonder how do you not notice or maybe you do but you just don't want to say anything. Hm, life's confusing and I think we can all agree.

Everyone around me is falling in "love" and it's like how come that isn't me? I'm not hitting some depression stage or anything, but fuck, I've never felt so lonely before. Do you know what I mean? I know being in a relationship isn't everything, but I'm starting to miss the small parts of it.
I've been single for offically 5 months and 3 weeks and this Saturday hits the Sixth month. Wow, good job to me! Way to be independent. (:

What am I talking about? My AP English Exam tomorrow, oh the joy. It's not something to worry or really stress about because we've been reviewing this for the past week. But, I do regret not going to the practice sessions after school and actually taking the time to write out the AP Review Prompts and there's no point of doing it now because I'm not really going to learn anything from it.

I just pre-made my breakfast, haha. I think I'm going to head to bed after I finish my list of stuff to talk about tomorrow at the VSA Meeting, this could get ugly.

A Year In The Making

The Vietnamese Student Association Officer Board of 2009 - 2010 met for the first time on Wednesday.

As much as I wanted the room to be just us, there were other people in the room. The feeling - or should I say pressence - that I felt was a good one. We all introduced ourselves and talked for a bit about things to come and there was no awkwardness or anything because everyone pretty much knew each other. Here are your officers for the upcoming year:

VSA President - Daniel Nguyen
VSA Co-Vice Presidents - Lana Le & Rebecca Chung
VSA Secretary - Jenny Nguyen
VSA Co-Publicity - Doreen Tran & Kevin Tat
Activites Commissioner - Nancy Bui

I love how it's just the Class of 2010. Our next meeting is coming up and shit, I'm not going to sit back and enjoy the ride. I expect things out of each and every one of these officers. They were chosen because they were the best out of the best and that's all I want to see from them and nothing else. No drama. No procatination. No fucking around. I might sound like a bitch, but after everything I've seen and been through, I'm not going to make the same mistakes. Sure we'll have our downfalls, but it's going to be a downfall because we tried, not because we sat there bickering about stupid stuff. Haha, if one of you guys are reading this before Wednesday, yeah expect something different from me at that meeting because I'm stepping it up.

Dream

The other day I had a dream - well I suppose you can't really call it a dream, but you can't call it a nightmare either.

I really can't remember how it all started, but I remember being in the CHAMPS kitchen and being really pissed at Rebecca and Nancy for bringing me somewhere or to someone. Nancy was trying to say sorry and tried to hug me, but I pushed her off and grabbed the knife on the table and pointed it at her and told her to back off, then Rebecca got in the way and told me to stop being so dramatic and I said, "Shut the fuck up", and I slit her throat and watched her hit the table and fall to the ground.

Yeah, I don't know either, but I'm pretty sure it means something. Better watch out.

Finally. . .

May 4, 2009

Hello Again. . .

It's been exactly 1 month, 3 weeks, and 2 days since I've last written here.

But, before I get started I bet you're all wondering, "Where has Daniel Nguyen been for these past 7 weeks and 2 days?". Apparently I've been living life, haha. I could write a whole book on what I have been doing or secretly try and go back to post the events to their original dates and hope no one would notice, but nah. What happened in those 7 weeks will stay the way they are unless they are needed to be mention in more detail. And, I tried to change my blog layout so that it's a bit different, but who am I kidding? It's crap, haha, when I'm not lazy I'll fix it up. Also, I'm only going to put one entry instead of displaying the whole journal because I don't really like some of the previous entries and I'm trying to stop the habit of hiding / deleting them, so if I don't see them, then they're not there. So, if you're just joining this crazy world of mines, you're going to have to go back to the beginning and fill yourself in.

Last night was finishing up my C.H.A.M.P. Video Project and as I laid there in bed waiting for the all the components to come together as one video, Crystal and I had an interesting discussion about my future, which put me in the blogging mood. After AP English Testing is over, apparently we have a assignment called I-Search, where we research a topic that you're interested in and you write the history on the topic and interview people or try to apply yourself to it. I laid there thinking, what am I going to write about? What brings great interest to me? For some odd reason, I wanted to do dancing. There was just something about that topic that I wanted to explore. As Crystal was telling me the things I could do about dancing for my I-Search, she said, "It's going to ask you why you chose the topic", and knowing Ms. Courey I couldn't just put it as, "It brings great interest to me." So what was it about the essence of dancing that I wanted to write and research about it? It came to me in less than a minute. Passion. Watching dancers dance, it's their passion that I admire. Spending hours learning or creating choreography, perfecting their moves so that it's precise, crisp, and clean, they way they freestyle as if dancing was easy as breathing. This thought lead me to realize, I'm not passionate about anything. Many people assume that Daniel Nguyen has figured out what he wants to do with his life, cooking. Not true. I seem to do cooking just because I do it. It's more of an interest than something I want to do with my life. I compare myself with others and their skill surpasses mine, and you might say well that's why you learn and practice to become better, but I don't have the "will" to improve myself. Crystal said that we're the type has that drive, but no passion.

So where do I find "passion"? I've decided that this summer will: Explore. Discover. Become. As weird and dumb that sounds, I think there was a reason why I went to Fresno to FHA-Hero. I'm going to spend my summer finding out who I really am and what I want to do with my life. I'm not sure what's going to happen in the future, but whatever it is, I'm going to live it up. :D

One Step At a Time

I just need to take one step at a time, there's no need to rush, it's like learning to fly or falling in love. It's going to happen and it's suppose to happen, when we find the reasons why. One step at a time.
